Lets Do The Hop – Bunny Blog Hop

The Art Jewelry Elements Theme Challenge for March is Hares and Bunnies.  The challenge was simple:  Make a rabbit or hare bead or piece of jewelry and share it on March 31st.

A collection of earthenware rabbits

A collection of earthenware rabbits in Oaxaca, Mexico

I don’t have any rabbit or hare beads with me here in Mexico, so I couldn’t really participate in terms of making something new.  So instead I’m going to share a rabbit necklace that is currently available in my shop, as well as some rabbit jewelry that I have designed and sold in the past.

First off is this delightful “Bunny Love” necklace.  I was lucky enough to snare this double bunny pendant from Nancy Adams of Round Rabbit. Her ceramic work sells fast, so I was pleased to have been at the right place at the right time to grab this pendant.

The Bunny Love necklace is in my shop, which, by the way, is brand spankin’ new!  I’ve been busy this past month setting up my own, stand-alone website.  Some things will remain in my Etsy shop, but my complete line of jewelry and ceramic components will only be available on my website.  The web address is easy to remember. Its just my name and dot com. .www.LindaLandig.com  I will be back in the States soon and all orders placed now will ship on April 7th, via USPS.

I love bunnies, so I thought I’d share a couple of my previously sold designs as well.  This necklace features one of Jenny Davies-Reazor’s wonderful ceramic hare pendants.  I made it for display in her both for Bead Fest 2013.

This necklace dates way back to 2010, but it is still one of my favorites.  I love the carved pendant!

September Component of the Month Reveal

Its time for the Art Jewelry Elements September Component of the Month Reveal!  This month’s components are from Kristi Bowman Design.

Copper PMC Pendants by Kristi Bowman

I love Kristi’s copper metal clay pieces and have used many of them in my jewelry designs over the years.  For this month’s design, I chose the first piece in the bottom row of the picture above.

Unfortunately I had a lot going on this month and somehow the end of the September snuck up on me sooner than I expected.  So today’s post will be a peek at a work in progress necklace.

COM 3I just loosely strung the beads on walnut colored, waxed linen cording, to give you an idea of where I’m going with this.  The final piece will be knotted between the beads.

COM 1aI wrapped the center of Kristi’s pendant with turquoise colored Wooly Wire.  I also wrapped two channel beads with Wooly Wire.  I love the vibrant turquoise with Kristi’s copper pendant and the Wooly Wire adds such a nice soft texture contrast to the hard copper.

COM I continued the copper and turquoise theme with some gorgeous, handmade raku beads that I got from Xaz Beads, at Bead Fest last year.

COM Unfortunately that’s as far as I got with this project.  I’ll post an update later this week when I finish the necklace.

So now I encourage you to visit the other participants blogs to see what they created with Kristi’s pendants.  And visit Kristi’s shop too, to see more of her work!

Its time for another Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge Reveal.  Participants have challenged themselves to make a pair of earrings every week.  All of our earrings include art beads or components.  Here are my new creations from the past 2 weeks.

Brown Bunny

 Tuesday News Day

Welcome to News Day Tuesday –  the day for jewelry updates and snippets of life

Garden Visitor

We live in a little neighborhood that is surrounded by woods. Our neighbors are not only human, but also include deer, great blue herons, bats, newts, raccoons and bunnies.  Lots of bunnies!  My husband is an amazing gardener, and as such, he is not too fond of the little brown rodents with the fuzzy white tails.  However, since I do not like to muck about in the dirt, I love our rabbits.

One day, last week, I took an evening stroll through our garden and noticed that we had a visitor.  I dashed inside and grabbed my camera.  The sun was setting rapidly and it was a bit difficult to get clear pictures in such low light, so I apologize.  But be patient, please, because the pictures improve a little further down the page, once I realized that I should change the camera settings for low light conditions. In the picture below, our furry guest was checking me out and wondering if he could go on nibbling the grass or if I posed a threat.

Bunny

He decided I was safe and he proceeded to roll over and over in the bark, in order to scratch his back.  I had to chuckle.

Next came some washing…Bunny washing

…and some exploration.

All this time I had been slowly creeping closer and closer to him.  In the picture below, he turns to look at me and assess the situation.

I have always loved bunnies and have made 2 bunny necklaces in the past.  It was about time for bunny necklace #3!  It just so happened that I had a cute little handmade ceramic bunny by Shaterra Clay Studio.

Brown Bunny Necklace

Isn’t he a cutie?  I placed him on a sage-green  lampwork glass headpin. I had some really cool peach aventurine triangles that look awesome with the brown bunny and sage green lampwork. I like this color combo so much that I’m looking forward to doing other projects in the same color-way.

Brown Bunny Necklace

I threaded sage green Czech glass within and between the peach adventure and finished it with an antiqued brass chain.  You can keep this bunny.  He won’t run away under the fence! 😉

Find the “Brown Bunny Necklace” here.

Turquoise Feathers Bracelet

 Tuesday News Day

Welcome to News Day Tuesday –  the day for jewelry updates and snippets of life

Turquoise Feathers Bracelet

I just re-listed the Turquoise Feathers Bracelet in my ArtFire Shop.  I had it listed there awhile ago, but had removed it.  The bracelet was at the Catwalk Gallery in Tacoma until recently, but sadly, we had to close shop because the University of Washington had just loaned us that space and they wanted it back again.  So I brought all my jewelry back home and am slowly getting it listed online.

Turquoise Purple Lampwork Glass Bead Bracelet Pearls Sterling Silver

Turquoise Feathers Bracelet

The lovely, handmade glass focal bead was the inspiration for the name “Turquoise Feathers”.  The artist started by making an all white glass bead.  Then they added an undulating swirl of purple on both sides of the bead.  Next they added a stripe of turquoise and then pulled a thin, sharp tool through the still molten turquoise glass, causing a feathered pattern to appear. Isn’t it a lovely effect?

Turquoise Purple Lampwork Glass Bead Bracelet Pearls Sterling Silver

Turquoise Feathers Bracelet

I matched the colors in the focal bead with purple and white freshwater pearls.  But to add visual interest, I alternated oval pearls with “button” pearls.  I interspersed turquoise crystals throughout, for contrast and a touch of sparkle.  This would make a pretty treat for yourself at only $18-.

ArtFire is now set up to allow 10 pictures of each item, so you can get a really complete picture of each item.  The Turquoise Feathers Bracelet listing shows both sides of the focal bead and also includes one picture of it in my hand, to help you gauge the size.

Artists Garage Sale

I had a booth at the Artists Garage Sale on  May 18th, here in Olympia.  This unique show is an opportunity for area artists to destash unwanted art supplies and sell their less expensive artwork.   For some reason we only had about half as many artists there, as in the past and the shoppers were way fewer as well.  I don’t know why this happened.  So things were a bit slow and I sold somewhat less than in years past, but it was still worthwhile.  I have tons of beads to destash and this was a good start.

Jewelry booth

Here’s one end of my booth. The boxes contain some of my destash beads.  I sorted the beads into sections by color.

I also sold findings.

I also brought along finished jewelry, but I only sold one pair of earrings.  People were mostly there to get all sorts of art destash materials.

My next show will be a regular-style arts show on June 23rd.  It will be part of the local Boston Harbor, WA Garden Tour.  If you are local, I hope you’ll stop by and say “hi!”

Upcoming Show – Sort Of

I am blessed to live in a  funky, artsy town.  An annual event here is called the Artist’s Garage Sale.  This is not your everyday art show!  It is an opportunity for area artists to destash unwanted art supplies and sell their less expensive artwork.  It’s a great event for people to pick up affordable art, jewelry, beads, art print cards, paints, canvases, fabric, yarn etc.  I will have a booth at the Artist’s Garage sale this Saturday.  I will be selling my jewelry, plus I’m destashing tons of beads at below cost.

Spring Is In The Air

 Tuesday News Day

Welcome to News Day Tuesday –  the day for jewelry updates and snippets of life.

I’ve gotten so far behind on blogging!  My apologies.  Today’s blog post is a compilation of  items and events from the past month.  I have more catching up to do beyond this, but at least this is a start!

Happy Mango Beads

On Easter, Happy Mango Beads published a blog post featuring one of my necklaces and a handful of other handmade jewelry that is ideal for springtime wear.  My “Monet’s Garden Necklace” was their first featured piece.  This necklace’s focal piece is a beautiful watercolor-style ceramic pendant by Yolanda’s Clay, accented by Swarovski crystals, pink Peruvian opal, rose quartz and aventurine.

Historic Mexican Jewelry

In March, I wrote an Art Jewelry Element blog post about a museum I visited during my stay in Oaxaca, Mexico last fall.   The Belber Jimenez Museum has a nice collection of historic Mexican jewelry, from pre-Columbian time through the 1940’s. If you enjoy seeing historic jewelry, you might want to check it out.

Gull Harbor Arts and Crafts Show

I did my first show of the spring season on March 16th and 17th.  It was a smallish community show, with a nice  collection of locally handcrafted fine art and crafts, including watercolors, ceramic arts, jewelry, fiber arts, photography, garden art, handcrafted soap and wearable art.  It also supported a good cause.  10% of  proceeds were  donated to a local organization fighting childhood cancer.

On Broadway

 Tuesday News Day

Welcome to News Day Tuesday –  the day for jewelry updates and snippets of life

On Broadway

The Broadway Center For The Performing Arts is hosting a fundraising auction, in support of providing performing arts opportunities for young people, in Tacoma, WA.  The person in charge of the auction visited Catwalk Gallery, saw my work there and asked if I could contribute an item to the auction.

All proceeds from Star Chefs on Broadway support a stellar cause: The largest arts in education program in Washington State, serving 35,000 students and teachers per year. For most of these kids, the Broadway Center is their only arts experience of any kind. Many face a tough mix of economic need, cultural barriers, geographic and social isolation. No child is ever turned away because of the inability to pay. This year, with your help, we’ll raise more than $300,000 through silent and live auctions to help these kids access vital arts education programs, from school matinée performances to youth violence prevention programs, and from original touring shows celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. to year round classes and workshops.

Here’s the necklace that I designed for the Broadway Center’s auction.  The necklace features lampwork glass by Beads and Botanicals and Genea Beads, plus ceramic beads from Gaea.

Bunny Love

I was lucky enough to snag a bunny pendant from Nancy Schindler of  Round Rabbit Extra!  Nancy’s work is so sought after that the moment she posts something new, it sells out.  I just happened to be at the right place at the right time!

I love bunnies – not just at Easter –  but all year round.  Who can resist their so-soft fur, wiggly noses, and bunny ears?  Melt.  I had a German professor in college that had a pet bunny that was trained to use a kitty litter box.  So therefore the bunny didn’t need to be caged.  She just hopped all around his house.  I thought it was so cool!

Its A Wrap

 Tuesday News Day

Welcome to News Day Tuesday –  the day for jewelry updates and snippets of life.

Wired Bangle Bracelet

To follow up on last week’s post, I finished the wrapped and twined bracelet I was making for my friend’s birthday.  I was complaining of sore hands from the wire work, last week, but then I got the idea to use one of those gripper things you have in the kitchen to open jar lids.  It gripped the wire much more firmly than my hand could.  That enabled me to lighten my grip on the wire.  The next day I was able to complete the bangle without any pain!

I started out with over 8 feet of wire!  It looked like this to start.

Wire Bangle in progress

I’m taking an e-course from Kerry Bogert to improve my wire-working skills.  You can see that its my first attempt.  There are patches where the wire wrapping has gaps, but there are also spots where it looks pretty good.  Practice makes better.

When I finished the bangle, I decided to add a matching bead dangle.  Here’s the finished project.  My friend loves it and told me she was proud of me for always striving to broaden my skill set.

I’m excited because the next project that I’m going to attempt in Kerry’s class is a variation on this bracelet, that also includes an artisan focal bead that is wired onto the bracelet.  I’m hoping to be able to get started on it, on Wednesday.

Green Spindle Earrings

I gave a sneak peek of these earrings a couple of weeks ago, but I’d never gotten around to listing them in my shop–till now!  The Green Spindle earrings feature lovely artisan-made ceramic dangles by Marti’s Buttons and Beads.  These earring have a fairly simple design, but I love the graceful shape of the ceramic dangles with the pretty glass beads that are accented with tiny pink rosettes.
