June 2017 Component Challenge

Today is the reveal for the June 2017 Component Challenge, hosted by Janice Everett in her Facebook group Artisan Create Together.  Mari Carmen of Majoyoal  donated 12 pairs of her beautiful ceramic components for this Challenge. I received one of the violet pairs from the picture below.

I  really admire Mari Carmen’s way with glazes.  Her color combinations and the way she swirls the glaze colors together, without them ever looking muddy, just fills me with awe. 

For some reason the larger Czech glass flowers in my photos look like they are blue.  In reality they are lavender and purple with hints of gold. The Swarovski crystals are a pale, translucent green which echos the green at the top of Mari Carmen’s ceramic components.

Mari Carmen lives in Spain and I speak a little very basic Spanish. Whenever she comments on my Facebook page in Spanish, I try to read it without hitting the translate button, although she frequently comments in English too.  If I am able, I like to comment on her posts in Spanish.  You may remember that we lived in Oaxaca, MX for 3 months, two or three years ago. So I like to use my tiny bit of Spanish when I can.

I just want to thank Janice for all the work she puts into Artisan Create Together and I’d like to thank Mari Carmen for generously sharing her beautiful ceramic components with us.

Facebook Trunk Show

This Saturday I will be having a trunk show in a wonderful Facebook group called Artisans Create Together.  This group has been a great resource for finding out about jewelry designers and component makers that I’d not known about before.  They’ve also featured old favorites of mine, as well. The primary purpose of the group is to get to know various jewelry artists, but they do have trunk shows too.  I was the featured artist on Wednesday and the info about me is still on the page.  The founder of the group, Janice Everett of J-Lynn Jewels, shared info and photos about my studio spaces, my family and home, as well as my creative journey.

Saturday’s Trunk Show will feature my ceramic jewelry components and my finished jewelry as well as work by Dana Phillips.  Here are some sneak peek at some of my offerings.

January 2015 in Review

The first month of 2015 has gone by in a rush.  Our big adventure is that we are living in Oaxaca, Mexico through the end of March.  We celebrated the New Year in Oaxaca by dancing to an awesome marimba band and watching fireworks.

Snowflake Necklace

AJE Component of the Month Reveal

Once a month Art Jewelry Elements (AJE) hosts a component giveaway and jewelry reveal.  December’s component was made by Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio.  Members of the Art Jewelry Elements team, plus a few  lucky guest artists were given one of these awesome ceramic snowflake pendants to design with.  Today we get to see what everyone created!

I received one of the turquoise snowflakes to work with.  I decided to highlight the triangular shaped points of the snowflakes, by using some bicone shaped beads and by creating a triangular shaped clasp.

The triangular link is based on a link from Cindy Wimmer‘s book The Missing Link.  I used a bit lighter gauge wire and made it a bit smaller, so it wouldn’t overwhelm Diana’s pendant.  Then I used the same basic idea, but created a hook on one end, so I could use it as a clasp.

The beads are strung on walnut colored Irish waxed linen.  The beautiful batiked ribbon wrapped a bead order I got from Karen Totten of Starry Road Studio.  It has some turquoise in it, along with shades of blue, black and green.  So pretty and it was a perfect finishing touch for my necklace.

I love autumn in ways that I can’t even find words for.  The colors stir something deep inside me.  I’m filled with inspiration.

I took this inspiration with me into the studio.  I’ve been unhappy with many of my recent ceramic pieces, which have been tossed into my “Fugly Bin” and have not been posted online.  But this….this I love!  It says fall to me in big, bold, vibrant colors.  I was so happy when this pendant came out of the kiln today!

September Component of the Month Reveal

Its time for the Art Jewelry Elements September Component of the Month Reveal!  This month’s components are from Kristi Bowman Design.

Copper PMC Pendants by Kristi Bowman

I love Kristi’s copper metal clay pieces and have used many of them in my jewelry designs over the years.  For this month’s design, I chose the first piece in the bottom row of the picture above.

Unfortunately I had a lot going on this month and somehow the end of the September snuck up on me sooner than I expected.  So today’s post will be a peek at a work in progress necklace.

I just loosely strung the beads on walnut colored, waxed linen cording, to give you an idea of where I’m going with this.  The final piece will be knotted between the beads.

I wrapped the center of Kristi’s pendant with turquoise colored Wooly Wire.  I also wrapped two channel beads with Wooly Wire.  I love the vibrant turquoise with Kristi’s copper pendant and the Wooly Wire adds such a nice soft texture contrast to the hard copper.

I continued the copper and turquoise theme with some gorgeous, handmade raku beads that I got from Xaz Beads, at Bead Fest last year.

Unfortunately that’s as far as I got with this project.  I’ll post an update later this week when I finish the necklace.

Waxed Linen Jewelry Blog Hop

Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio is hosting a waxed linen blog hop today.  If you are not a jewelry designer, you may wonder what waxed linen is.  It is a linen thread that is coated with wax for stiffness and durability.  As far as I know, it was originally used for artisan bookbinding and for twining handmade baskets.  It comes in many colors and  is a fun and versatile material for stringing beads.

A couple of years ago I took a class from Erin Siegel where we learned to make earrings using Irish waxed linen.  I’ve been happily knotting linen cording ever since!

When I first heard that Diana was hosting a waxed linen blog hop, I imagined that I would have quite a few pieces of new jewelry to show today.  But I’ve been so wrapped up in making ceramic pendants lately, that it wasn’t until last night that I started to work on a necklace.

However, I do love working with with waxed linen, so making this necklace was a pleasure.

The ceramic raven pendant was made by Oh! Sullivan Studio. Most of the ceramic beads were made by Mary Hubbard of White Clover Kiln.

The dark blue ceramic beads are from Kazuri Beads.  There’s some recycled glass and Czech glass beads, too.  I like the way that the linen knots separate the beads, so they stand out more and the way it adds an extra bit of color.

Welcome to the Earrings Everyday Blog Hop!   Earrings Everyday hosts a monthly earring challenge and blog hop.  We post a picture on the Earrings Everyday blog to inspire your earring designs and then one month later we have a blog hop to see what everyone has made!

My earrings were inspired by the flowers on the quilt and in the tapestry.  The earrings aren’t the same colors as in the picture, but I had the orange lampwork flowers on hand and I had fun layering the flowers.

Daffodil Earrings

The cream colored centers remind me of the trumpet centers of daffodils.  Our previous house had a big field in the back, where over the years, my husband planted over one thousand daffodils for me.  At this time of year we had bouquets of daffodils in nearly every room and a big bouquet at work, too.  Every spring I think of our field of daffodils and how that was one way in which my husband said “I love you.” to me.
